YES! Sunflowers are very easy to grow! I grew my first sunflower without any sunflower growing experience what-so-ever! I purchased a packet of sunflower seeds one spring day because it had a picture of beautiful bi-colored sunflowers on the cover! I was intrigued with whether I could grow a flower that was as big, bold, and beautiful as the picture promised!
I didn’t think much at the time about what sunflowers needed to grow, other than reading the back of the packet. I simply thought they would look perfect on a small berm we had added to our backyard the previous year
At planting time, I poked some holes in the ground, dropped a few seeds into each hole and covered them up. End of story. No researching, no online investigating, no sweating over the details. I just buried the seeds in the dirt and went on my merry way.
Much to my amazement the sunflower seeds quickly sprouted and grew into tall, beautiful sunflowers just like the picture on the packet of seeds! I did that! I grew sunflowers! Beautiful, bi-colored sunflowers!
Now, as proud as I was of my beautiful sunflowers, I couldn’t help but think they also looked kinda goofy too. So much so that they made me giggle a bit every time I saw them. They were beautifully, adorably, wonderfully…goofy!
Therefore, I did what any sunflower farmer would do to a beautiful, but goofy looking flower, I drew a smiley face on the picture of one of my sunflowers and I posted it to Facebook for all the world to see. As you can see from the picture, my beautiful sunflower really does have a goofy face!
So let my (lack of) sunflower growing experience be an inspiration to you! Sunflowers are very easy to grow! If you have dreamed of growing sunflowers or been enticed by pretty pictures on seed packets, consider being impulsive like I was and go ahead and plant them in your back yard!
The beautiful thing about sunflowers is they spring up and quickly grow and bloom under the right conditions! As their name implies, sunflowers need a lot of sun to grow to their fullest potential.
If you would like to dig a little deeper into the basics of growing happy sunflowers, I have an article explaining the basics of how to grow sunflowers. hope you find it helpful!
